    Nocebo effect

    Definition

Merriam-Webster's Medical Dictionary describes the nocebo effect as "the development of adverse side effects or worsening in the condition of a patient that occurs in response to medical treatment but cannot be considered due to the specific treatment used". The expectations of the patient worsen the outcome of treatment, as opposed to the placebo effect, where the expectations of the patient improve the outcome of treatment.
