    Straw man / steel man

A straw man is a misrepresentation of another person's claim, which is then easier to disarm as being wrong and/or ridiculous. If you notice a straw man argument is used in a discussion you're having, it is a good sign you're not involved in a good faith discussion. A further trap can be to knee jerk into defending the straw man rather than your actual position.

A steel man is the most charitable representation you can make of another person's claim, which improves the chance of a productive discussion of the claim. You can further improve that chance by explicitly asking the other person whether your understanding of their claim is fair and accurate.
